2008 GOTR 5K FUN RUN, NOVEMBER 22!

Each lesson plan is divided into activities with specific functions to enhance the learning process.

Each begins with a "Getting on Board" activity, which brings the girls' focus to the topic of the day.

Next the girls do a "Warm-Up" activity, which again focuses on the topic of the day, but does so in a manner which actually serves to warm up their muscles, joints and cardiovascular system.

After the "Warm-Up" activity comes a "Processing" question and answer time.

During this time, girls will stretch while specific questions are asked to bring out the relevance of the "Warm-Up" activity to the topic.

Next is the "Workout" activity, during which the girls will do a variety of running workouts that incorporate a game or a team goal so that the girls do not eve realizing that they are running.

To conclude the lesson, the girls will answer some "Processing" questions related to the "Workout" Activity while they complete some cool-down stretching.

To close each session the coaches will "Wrap-Up" with positive words about individual and group behaviors. At this time, the coach will also hand out a snack and the group will finish with a cheer (decided upon by the girls).

Each lesson plan is clearly laid out. Materials are listed at the beginning of each lesson plan with a place to check off each item to insure you have fully prepared for the lesson. (Suggestions: The first time you read the lesson plan, skip over the materials section, and return to it once you've read the lesson plan through. The material section will make more sense once you understand the material usage.)

Processing is the most important piece of the lesson plan. Processing relates the activities to the "real world" and requires good listening skills. To insure thorough processing, design your own focusing technique that will insure the girls' attention. Some coaches use certain whistle signals. For example, two short whistles means that all girls needed to run to her and gather quietly in a circle. Another coach simply raised her hand to signify time for processing. Discover what works best for you. Perhaps the girls can come up with a signal that you will do and then each one of them will mimic when they see you signifying processing time.
